The difference between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system is that the sympathetic nervous system functions to mobilize the bodys fight or flight response while parasympathetic nervous system functions to control the homeostasis of the body.





The bodys fight or flight response is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system which is one part of the autonomic nervous system.

The nervous system sends signals to and from different body parts via nerves. The other part is the parasympathetic nervous system which works to relax and slow down the bodys response.



The parasympathetic nervous system is composed mainly of the cranial and sacral spinal nerves. The parasympathetic nervous system or psns is part of the nervous system. It originates in the spinal cord and the medulla and controls homeostasis or the maintenance of the bodys systems.



The part of the nervous system that slows the heart dilates blood vessels decreases pupil size increases digestive juices and relaxes muscles in the gastrointestinal tract. Its motor component consists of preganglionic and postganglionic neurons. The parasympathetic nervous system controls the rest and digest functions of the body.



The preganglionic neurons arising from either the brain or sacral spinal cord synapse with just a few postganglionic neurons which are located in or near the effector organ muscle or gland. The psns is responsible for all the bodily activities that take place when an animal is at rest. The parasympathetic nervous system is organized in a manner similar to the sympathetic nervous system.



The preganglionic neurons are located in specific cell groups also called nuclei in the brainstem or in the lateral horns of the spinal cord at sacral levels. The parasympathetic nervous system together with the sympathetic nervous system constitutes the autonomic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system is part of the autonomic nervous system.
